Jonathan,
I would not consider staying here again unless some really fundamental things change. I will be writing to them to with the items listed here and hope that they will heed at least some of them.
We stayed in the four poster room and the room decor and look was very good, the staff were also very helpful and willing to help.
Despite the room itself being very nice, the main BIG drawback was the fact that the website and booking procedure gives no indication that a number of the rooms are actually above the bar, which from what we could tell from our two night stay was actually a popular local pub that worked late into the night (late license I can only assume?). The roof to the bar is in no way sound proofed and the premier suite which we were staying in is actually directly above the bar. Both nights we stayed, the level of noise coming through the floor was extremely loud, one evening we just couldn't stand it and had to go out even though we weren't planning to. It is no overstatement that we felt forced out of our room...It would be impossible to sleep and even with the television on very loud you could still clearly hear the bar. The second night there was a live band in the bar that was so loud you could feel the vibrations through the chairs we were sitting on in our room. Even after the punters had left, there was still clearly audible talking and music coming through the floor from the staff beyond 1am on both nights, on the first night we put up with it and managed to sleep. On the second night I actually had to go downstairs to the bar when it reached 2am to alert them to the fact we could clearly hear them talking and playing music to get some peace. Granted they did immediately quieten down but I just can't believe that they were not already aware of how easily sound passes through to the bedrooms?!?A more minor point but still significant is that it felt like a number of fundamentals were missing from the hotel that you would expect to be there by default from the kind of hotel they are attempting to be. Firstly there was a list of items that should be included with the room, not all of them were there and we had to request then. The bathroom had barely any surfaces to place anything, there was a small shelf by the sink that was easily covered by the provided toiletries leaving little room for customers items, and apart from a window sill at the other side of the large bathroom there was nowhere to put anything. The shower had no shelf inside to put soap or shower gel on so we had to instead bend down to pick up the shower gel bottle constantly. The towel rail was on the other side of the bathroom to the shower and a missing item that should have been provided was bath robes, so this really didn't make sense either. There was a large window in the bathroom that looked out onto rooms opposite, but there was no curtains or blinds or anything, not even a net curtain over this window. We asked the staff and they said those rooms were blocked off and unused, but nevertheless, there was no feeling of privacy in the bathroom. Like I said, these aren't huge items, but for me it is the little touches and attention to detail that really makes a hotel.I think that the main problem with Y Beuno is that it tries to have the best of both worlds, a popular local pub, and a 4 star hotel combined in one. For me it just doesn't work, and its a real shame, because if the issues listed here were worked on, there is the potential to have a really quality establishment here which would actually be in keeping with the kind of experience portrayed on the website.
